Weather Resilient Homes

Weather Resilient Homes

Living in SW Florida, comes with so many perks, we have beautiful beaches, stunning sunsets, year-round activities and no state income tax. Unfortunately, Florida experiences occasional inclement weather. But did you know that building a new home means your home is designed to weather the storms? Below are just a few of the standard building processes and details that Tundra pays strong attention to on every home that we construct. Our staff is well-versed in building code requirements and in dealing with local building departments and authorities.

The Basics:
Current Florida building codes require a good building envelope to prevent water intrusion during hurricanes. This means windows, doors, and roof penetrations are properly sealed.

Every lot that we build on is evaluated from the as-is lot elevation to the FEMA flood elevation and built no less than 1’ above the flood elevation.  Additionally, your lot is designed with drainage in mind therefore helping to reduce the risk of water intrusion.

The location of your lot will also determine the wind load that is required for components such as your roof, trusses and garage doors. These components are then engineered to meet those specific requirements.

The Basics Include:

  • Impact windows & doors
  • Hydrostatic flood vents as needed
  • Rebar reinforcement from foundation through tie beam
  • Heavy duty truss tie downs

Added Benefit of Lower Insurance Rates.
According to one local insurance agent “approximately half of the cost of a homeowners policy is directly attributed to the peril of wind (hurricane). Tundra homes are all built in compliance with the Florida building code.  The cost of homeowners insurance should always be less for a new home compared to an older built home.”

The Extras:

While our standard construction methods already ensure a weather-resilient home, we'd be happy to discuss additional features and options tailored to your family's specific needs and your property's unique location.

  • Pilings and/or break-a-way foundations
  • Hurricane shutters
  • Underground propane tank
  • Whole home generator
  • Concrete block second story construction
  • Increased finished floor height

Here are testimonials from our past clients regarding their Tundra homes' performance after Hurricane Ian, a powerful Category 4 hurricane that made landfall in Southwest Florida.

“You posted recently about our home built in 2004, it went through Hurricane Charlie with no problems and now 18 years later, it continues to stand strong with Hurricane Ian. Tundra makes quality homes and does not cut corners. Thank you, Tundra Homes!”

“Tundra built our home in 2019 and we withstood hurricane Ian with no damage, no leaks around windows, etc. I felt very safe in our strong house.”

“My Tundra Home was a fortress. The only damage we had was the screens on the pool cage, a 1 foot piece of soffit tore off the side of the house and a small piece of the gutter material in the front was twisted and now dangling. Very minor compared to all those who lost so much. I thank you for building us this incredible house. Not 1 drop of water came in, not one drop.”

“You built us a beautiful bunker! Only damage was a 4” tear in the pool screen. Thank you! “

“Thank you so much Tundra. We had very limited damage to our new home- only lanai screens. We hope all of the Tundra family is safe. “

“I want to tell the Tundra team that this house is a very well and strong house !!!.....only few roof tiles that I have to change....but everything in Pine Island that I saw was very damaged”

“You built for us Aug 2014-Jan 2015. Wanted to let you know our exceptionally well built house has sustained. You get what you pay for. Thanks and with gratitude to you & your team! “

“One of the only homes that escaped with very little damage on the island. We had pool screens blown out in some spots, very minor damage to the house. You built us a fortress Tundra Homes. Love you all! ❤ My neighbors are missing walls, roofs, windows, siding and complete upper levels missing. It's like a huge wall was built all around our house to protect it. Unbelievable!”

"Stood like a brick wall, like the statue of liberty”
